Wool Garment Care

Wools are nearly care free when it comes to wrinkles. The elasticity in wool fiber resists wrinkling and returns it to its original shape. If a little wrinkling should occur during wear, allowing a wool garment to hang for 24 hours usually restores a smooth appearance with no need for pressing. Now that light weight wools are suitable for year-round wear, this can be of particular advantage in warmer weather months when many other "cool" fabrics are more prone to wrinkling.

Before storing wool garments for the off-season, it is very important that they be cleaned. Food stains or invisible body oils picked up from wear are highly attractive to moths. Dry cleaning solvent will kill any eggs or larvae. Both dry cleaning and laundering will remove them from the garment. Once cleaned, wool garments should be stored in an airtight bag or container.

Generally, these measures should protect your wool clothing. But should you be unlucky enough to find new signs of ventilation in one of your wool garments, here are a few tips to remember--
bulletClean all of the wool garments that are stored in the same vicinity to prevent further damage. As an alternative, freezing wool garments for several weeks is also believed to kill eggs and larvae.
bulletClean and vacuum the contaminated area, concentrating on the crevices.
bulletCheck your wool garments frequently for any sign of insect damage.
bulletBrush wool garments on a regular basis during the wearing season (a lint brush works well).
